Alicia Ostriker chose Bilgere’s The White Museum for the 2009 Autumn House Press Poetry Prize. In 2006 Bilgere’s Haywire won the May Swenson Poetry Prize. U.S. Poet Laureate Billy Collins picked The Good Kiss to win the University of Akron Poetry Prize. Bilgere’s poems are featured on Garrison Keillor’s The Writer’s Almanac and U.S. Poet Laureate (2004–2006) Ted Kooser’s newspaper project “American Life in Poetry.”

He has received grants and awards from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Pushcart Foundation, the Witter Bynner Foundation through the Library of Congress, and the Fulbright Foundation. He has given readings in venues around the country, including the Library of Congress and the 92nd Street Y in New York. George is a 2014 Creative Workforce Fellow in Literature, a grant funded through Cuyahoga Arts & Culture. George also hosts a weekly radio show, WORDPLAY, an offbeat mix of poetry, comedy, and an ongoing exploration of the possibilities of the spoken word. |
